Musician Responsible for White Stripes-Aping Air Force Track Apologizes

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 11:30 AM PST

White-stripes

Yesterday, the White Stripes made clear their anger with a Super Bowl ad for the Air Force Reserve that was soundtracked by a song that sounded suspiciously like the Stripes' 2001 hit "Fell In Love With A Girl." Today, we have a response from the musician responsible.

First, the Air Force Reserve responded to the White Stripes' statement with a statement of their own:

"In response to the claims being made today regarding the Air Force Reserve regional ad that aired in select markets during the Super Bowl, the Air Force Reserve, through its advertising agency, hired Fast Forward Music of Salt Lake City to score original music for its commercial. There was never any intention to utilize any existing music or to sound like any music by the band White Stripes or any other musical performer. Any similarity or likeness to any other music is completely unintentional."

Wow - the Air Force Reserve just totally threw Fast Forward Music of Salt Lake City under the bus. So what do they have to say? 'Sorry,' basically. The musician responsible for the track, Kem Kraft, said any similarity was unintentional:

"I'm sorry it sounds the same. It wasn't my intention, truly, truly, truly."

Mike Lee, the owner of Fast Forward, added the following:

"I wasn't familiar with the White Stripes song. I've heard of the White Stripes but I'm not a listener of theirs. I had no idea there was similarity until after the fact."

So to recap: everyone is sorry, and also pleading the ignorance. Now, it's up to the White Stripes to accept the apologies of Fast Forward and the Air Force Reserve, or not. And also, it's up to the public to decide whether they believe Fast Forward, or whether they believe that Fast Forward simply got caught trying to swipe the sounds and tunes of the White Stripes for their own gain.

Alice In Chains Tour Blog: Boise, ID

AIC-21010sm

I'm a proud native of Idaho, so it was nice to finally return to the state with the band after a nearly 17 year absence.

Judging by the response of those in attendance, 17 years has been way too long.

The venue in Boise was one of the smallest we'll pass through on this tour, but the fans were loud and raucous.

The show sold out in about 3 seconds, so I was holding out hope that it would get moved to a bigger venue, but ultimately it stayed put.

That's okay though. It just makes the odds better that the band will come back through sometime in the future, knowing that there were a lot of people who weren't able to see them this time around.

So what did the guys do with their day off in Boise?

I don't know.

Occasionally they let me off of my leash long enough to do some things on my own, and since I have family and friends here, this was one of those times.

The two worlds did collide however, as my Mom and my StepDave dropped by soundcheck and met the band.

The guys were friendly & polite, which was nice, but the big surprise was that no foul language was uttered for a good five minutes, which might be a record for them.

We can't live in a G rated world for too long though, so about 45 minutes after the folks split, Jerry, Sean, & Mike were in the dressing room serenading me with their own R rated version of the Kinks song "Lola," with the title changed to "Baldo," and the lyrical content unprintable here.

Take one acoustic guitar, three talented musicians, the collective mentality of a junior high P.E. class locker room, and that's what you get.

Maybe they deserved to lose those seven Grammys after all...

Lil Wayne's Sentencing Delayed Due To Dental Work

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 09:17 AM PST

Lil Wayne was expected to begin serving a year-long prison term yesterday But then his teeth got in the way.

The rapper was scheduled to begin his sentence yesterday, February 9, at New York City's Rikers Island. The sentence, however, was delayed so that Wayne could undergo dental surgery, scheduled to happen February 12 in Miami. The recovery period is seven to ten days. (via AP)

Lil Wayne's sentence is due to a conviction on weapons charges following a 2007 incident. Yesterday, the judge ruling the case informed Lil Wayne's defense team that sentencing would begin no later than March 2.

The specific dental malady is apparently a cracked tooth. As Pitchfork points out, Wayne's love affair with candy is well-documented. A weapons conviction may only result in one year behind bars, but rotten teeth will last a lifetime.

New Strokes Album Coming In September, Says One Of The Strokes

Posted: 10 Feb 2010 07:55 AM PST

Strokes

Specifically, the one that used to be involved with Drew Barrymore.

Yes, it was drummer Fab Moretti that revealed the band's plan for an early fall release. As reported last week, the band began recording their fourth album with Joe Chicarelli at Avatar Studios in New York on February 1.

Moretti told BBC Newsbeat that basic tracks for the album have already been completed. Generally, that would indicate that, at the least, the foundational drums and bass tracks are complete. Now, guitars, keys and vocals are added on. As for how it's going, Moretti says that songwriting was 'kind of like riding a bicycle'... so that's good.

Moretti stated that the band are looking to a September release, which gives them plenty of time to mess around in the studio. Before that, though, there are some summer live shows to prepare for:

"We're going to rehearse as soon as we get out of the studio. As soon as we're done recording we're going to go in and practice all those old songs.

"I'm nervous as hell. It's giving me butterflies in my stomach.

"To be honest I haven't really been thinking about the old songs as we're so into recording these new ones.

"It's less the songs themselves and more the response from the band that I miss terribly. I'm excited."

Are the Strokes happy to be back together? Sounds like it.
