Alice In Chains Tour Blog: Oakland, CA

Wow. I've seen a lot of things at shows over the years, but tonight in Oakland marked another first.

I was filming out into the crowd from behind Sean when I saw a little girl sitting on her dad's shoulders right down in front. She couldn't have been more than four years old at the most, as cute and innocent looking as a girl could be, grinning and waving at Jerry.

Then she started singing along to "Them Bones". And then she threw the horns. And she kept it up too. This kid must have downed a few juice boxes before the show, because she had some stamina.

Normally I don't use the word adorable to describe anything at an Alice In Chains show, but this kid put a smile on my face nearly as big as hers.

I started imagining story time at pre-school the next day.

While the other kids are eating paste and talking about Teletubbies, this little girl is gonna whip out a story of how she nearly got swept up in a mosh during "Check My Brain". I don't know where you cast your vote for Father Of The Year, but her dad has mine.

Just like last fall when we were in San Francisco, we had some of the Bay area's finest come to check out the band. Members of Faith No More, Metallica, and Death Angel were in attendance, along with St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa.

It was another great show, and the Oakland fans were amazing.

After the show the guys hung out and schmoozed for a while, then we piled on the bus to head to L.A.

How do your heroes in Alice In Chains wind down on the tour bus after a two hour rock show?

If you guessed by watching the American Kennel Club National Championship on Animal Planet, you win.

Um, okay.

Pavement Rehearsal Twitpic Surfaces

Posted: 12 Feb 2010 08:28 AM PST

Pavement

The tweeter? Someone you may know. Photo after jump.

That is, if you're into the Decemberists. That's right, Colin Meloy himself uploaded the first imagery of the preparations for Pavement's return.

Meloy 'happened' upon a Pavement practice. And, it being 2010 and all, he did what any socially-networked dude would do: he tweeted.

Or, more precisely, he twitpic'ed. The brief copy Meloy delivered? 'In which he happens on a Pavement rehearsal.' Of course, this being Colin Meloy of the Decemberists, even an eight word tweet HAD to be somewhat story-like.

Pic is below. Given that Pavement main man Stephen Malkmus lives in Portland, OR, and Colin Meloy lives in Portland, one can bet that this rehearsal space is somewhere in PDX. And look - all of the Pavement peeps are in their normal onstage spots! Exciting.

In case you were wondering, or breathlessly marking off days on a calendar, the first Pavement show of the year takes place March 1 in Auckland, New Zealand - only 16 days away. But who's counting? Full itinerary here.

Here's Pavement at practice. Wow, etc.

Guns n' Roses Played A Secret, Tiny Show In New York Last Night

Posted: 12 Feb 2010 07:06 AM PST

Gnr

It went down at the John Varavatos store in the East Village. The space used to be something called 'CBGB.'

So why a secret show at a clothing store? Because it's Fashion Week in New York, where the famous and the (mostly) well-dressed assemble to look at each others' new clothes and go to small parties where bands like Guns n' Roses play.

The gig last night started well after midnight and concluded around 2:45am (via BrooklynVegan). Guns fans looking for more reasons to be frustrated that they weren't there should maybe not think about the fact that the room was reportedly half-empty by the end of the show. Still, it WAS nearly three in the morning. And hey - Kevin Bacon was there! So was Sebastian Bach, but he always seems to be lurking about when GNR's in the house.

To summarize: the Guns n' Roses with only one original member played a store that used to be CBGBs. Here's some video. Setlist below that. Pic above by TheBigPA.

Guns n' Roses Setlist:
1. You're Crazy
2. Mr Brownstone
3. Used to Love Her
4. Welcome to the Jungle
5. Street Of Dreams (The Blues)
6. Sorry
7. It's So Easy
8. Band intros --> Patience
9. Rocket Queen
10. jam --> Catcher in the Rye
11. My Michelle
12. Knockin' on Heavens Door
13. Whole Lotta Rosie (AC/DC cover)
14. Paradise City
encore
15. Sweet Child of Mine
16. This I Love
17. Night Train

John Mayer's Final Tweets?

Posted: 12 Feb 2010 06:34 AM PST

Twitterpic1

John Mayer, in an onstage breakdown, announced he was through with media. Will the tweets he delivered this week be his last?

To recap: Playboy this week published a fascinating (car wreck-style fascinating) interview with Mayer in which the guitarist, among other things, outs ex-gf Jessica Simpson as an energetic sexual partner (not so classy, John) and, bizarrely, claims that he has a 'n***** pass' from black people.

Then, Wednesday evening in Nashville, Mayer had A Moment, in which he was overcome with the intense weight of the week's events. While performing "Gravity," Mayer stopped playing, and addressed the crowd, and his band. Watch it here.

So, those tweets. On Wednesday afternoon at 4:44pm, Mayer began a ten-tweet long rant (including two @replies) that wound its way from admitting culpability in using harmful language for his own gain, through a more broad self-examination, before finally retreating into a statement of his Prime Objective - that is, to play guitar and write songs. By 5:30pm, the tweets had ended. Will these be the final tweets we see from @johncmayer? Should he stop? Or keep tweeting?
