The Scorpions Will Retire After New Album, Farewell Tour

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 11:12 AM PST

Band

And yes, the Scorpions were still together.

In fact, the German quintet, currently comprised of Klaus Meine, Matthias Jabs, Rudy Schenker, Pawel Maciwoda, and James Kottak, have been delivering the metal goods pretty much non-stop since their debut album bowed all the way back in 1972.

Over the course of a nearly forty year career, the Scorpions grew to be the most successful German export in the rock era, piling up hits like "Rock You Like A Hurricane" and "Winds Of Change" during their 80s and 90s peak.

To give you a sense of how long the Scorpions have been around, guitarist Schenker is 61. That's some aged spiked leather there.

The band will release Sting In The Tail, their final album, in March. A multi-year farewell tour will begin in Prague March 15. The first leg will run into the summer and is comprised of European dates.

Here is what the band posted on their official site:

"Important Message to our Fans

It was always our pleasure, our purpose in life, our passion and we were fortunate enough to make music for you - whether it was live on stage or in the studio, creating new songs.

While we were working on our album these past few months, we could literally feel how powerful and creative our work was – and how much fun we were still having, in the process. But there was also something else: We want to end the Scorpion's extraordinary career on a high note. We are extremely grateful for the fact that we still have the same passion for music we've always had since the beginning. This is why, especially now, we agree we have reached the end of the road. We finish our career with an album we consider to be one of the best we have ever recorded and with a tour that will start in our home country Germany and take us to five different continents over the next few years.

We want you, our fans, to be the first to know about this. Thank you for your never-ending support throughout the years!

We uploaded the very first snippets from our new album for you.

And now… let's get the party started and get ready for a "Sting in the Tail"!

See you on the world tour,

Yours

Scorpions"

The Scorpions' farewell tour is set to conclude in 2012, after which the world will end. And we would be remiss without saluting one of the best-named drummers of the rock era, Herman Rarebell.

As mentioned last week, famous rock band Radiohead (you may have heard of them) played a show to benefit Haiti relief at the Fonda, an intimate, 1300 cap venue in LA last night. Setlist, vids, and final dollar amount raised after jump.

The hefty setlist touched on nearly all facets of the band's career, and included 90s favorites from The Bends and OK Computer, as well as a new song: "Lotus Flower." Here's the setlist (via Stereogum):

SETLIST
"Faust Arp"
"Fake Plastic Trees"
"Arpeggi"
"National Anthem"
"Nude"
"Karma Police"
"Kid A"
"Morning Bell"
"How To Disappear Completely"
"Wolf At The Door"
"The Bends"
"Reckoner"
"Lucky"
"Body Snatchers"
"Dollars & Cents"
"Airbag"
"Exit Music (For A Film)"
//
"Everything In Its Right Place"
"You and Whose Army?"
"Pyramid Song"
"All I Need"
//
"Lotus Flower"
"Paranoid Android"
"Street Spirit"

Tickets to the show were sold via online auction: the amount raised is reportedly $572,754, all of which will go to Oxfam. The highest bid was $4000 for a pair of tickets. Celebs in attendance included Charlize Theron, Justin Timberlake, Drew Barrymore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Daniel Craig.

Here's some new Radiohead. It's good.

And some other highlights. Well done, Thom, Ed, Jonny, Colin, and Phil.

Hope For Haiti Now: Watch The Performances

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 08:33 AM PST

Jt

Friday night's Hope For Haiti Now telethon featured an A-list-heavy gathering of artists in response to this month's Haiti earthquake. The star power, as well as some genuinely moving performances and some once-in-a-lifetime collabos, more than made up for any bizarre (Madonna's possibly lipsynced perf?) moments. And most importantly, it was all for so important a cause. Videos, and links to buy after the jump.

Video Of The Day: Hot Chip, "One Life Stand"

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 06:09 AM PST

Hot-Chip

Hot Chip return with the title track to their fourth album, and the song is just as catchy and smart as fans have come to expect from the London quintet. Groovy moves in the video, after the jump, too.

Onelifestand

"One Life Stand" is taken from the album of the same name, out February 9.
