| Eddie Vedder Covers Bruce Springsteen For Haiti Relief Posted: 26 Jan 2010 10:06 AM PST Eight and a half years ago, Bruce Springsteen debuted his elegy "My City Of Ruins" during a post-9/11 telethon. This week, Eddie Vedder released his recent cover of that song to benefit Haiti relief.
The cover was performed and recorded at last month's Kennedy Centers Honors event (via The Tripwire). Vedder performed a rousing, choir-driven version of the song, which, while clocking in at an abbreviated two and a half minutes, does not lack for passion. Bruce certainly looked happy. And in case you were wondering, Bruce and Eddie go way back. During the Vote For Change Tour that went down during the run-up to the 2004 Presidential elections, Vedder performed with Springsteen and the E Street Band at the tour's New Jersey stop, with Eddie and Springsteen sharing lead vocal duties on Bruce's "Darkness On The Edge Of Town" and Pearl Jam's "Better Man." All proceeds of Eddie Vedder's "My City Of Ruins" go to Artists For Peace And Justice's Project Haiti. Purchase at Pearl Jam's Ten Club or at iTunes. | The Who Announce Super Bowl Setlist Posted: 26 Jan 2010 08:33 AM PST Well, there goes the anticipation. But really, it's what one what expect: a mashed up medley of The Greatest Hits, condensed into a smallish, palatable dose. Given the length of many of the Who's most recognizable songs, and the approximately twelve minute window they have to deliver, a medley makes sense. Last year, Bruce Springsteen's setlist was a closely-guarded secret; his catalog's abundance of household-name hits, as well as proven live favorites, fueled a plethora of speculation. The Who, though with no less rich a body of work, have less mystery surrounding their 12-minute show; it's generally thought that a medley would include some combination of "Pinball Wizard," "Baba O'Riley," "Won't Get Fooled Again," and "Who Are You." And... that's what we'll hear! According, that is, to Pete Townshend, who revealed the setlist to Billboard: "We're kinda doing a mashup of stuff. A bit of 'Baba O'Riley,' a bit of 'Pinball Wizard,' a bit of the close of 'Tommy,' a bit of 'Who Are You,' and a bit of 'Won't Get Fooled Again.' It works -- it's quite a saga. A lot of the stuff that we do has that kind of celebratory vibe about it -- we've always tried to make music that allows the audience to go a bit wild if they want to. Hopefully it will hit the spot." Hit the spot it will - it's the Super Bowl, not a fan-club only exploration of obscure material. Still, that dream of The Who performing "A Quick One While He's Away" in its entirety in front of the year's largest global audience was nice while it lasted. -- Conrad Doucette Photo via NFL.com |
| Did Guns n' Roses Ban Concertgoers From Wearing Slash Gear? Posted: 26 Jan 2010 06:01 AM PST They did, according to Canadian fans. Now, the Guns camp is fighting back (Get In The Ring, mother*#^!), saying reports of action against Slash-wearing tees are (sadly) not true.
The hubbub began over the weekend, when TMZ reported that fans at a Regina, Saskatchewan Guns show wearing Slash shirts were told to turn their shirts inside out, and, even more savagely, leave any top hats outside. Most fans complied, though a few refused to flip their shirts and walked. So who initially handed down the Stalinist, history-erasing order? TMZ says it spoke to concert security people, who claim that the order came down from a 'producer for the band.' Team Guns, however, fired back today (via SFGate). Guns main man Axl Rose's (deep breath) personal assistant's son Fernando Lebeis stepped forward to deny the allegations, claiming there was no ban, at least not one initiated by the band. Said Lebeis: "We did not advise any security to ban any sort of apparel... If they did, they did it on their own accord, or under someone else's order - from within their management." Aha - a he said/he said battle. Who do you believe? Why would concert security do this on their own? Are emotions in the Axl v. Slash war so intense that security recognized the volatile and potentially hazardous consequences of a showdown between rival supporters and, shrewdly, like organizers at a fierce, European soccer rivalry matchup, attempted to douse the flames of passion before a face-off could even begin? Or is Axl just being insecure? Eh, could go either way. -- Conrad Doucette Photo by Gene Kirkland via Slash's MySpace |
