Alice In Chains Tour Blog: Seattle, Night Two Posted: 08 Feb 2010 11:17 AM PST
Am I writing about any of those things? Nope. I'm going to take a few paragraphs to address the scathing review that was posted in the Seattle Times after the first sold out Seattle show. For some reason that I can't fathom, Alice In Chains has never gotten a fair shake from the printed media in Seattle. Back in the day there was a local weekly paper called The Rocket. It was the main entertainment paper that kept younger people informed about what was happening around town and in the local music scene. Well, I don't think The Rocket ever printed a kind word about Alice In Chains (on the rare occasions when they printed a word at all). There's another paper in town called The Stranger. I think when The Rocket folded all of their Alice-hating staff sent resumes to The Stranger, because the band gets the same treatment from that rag. The two Seattle daily newspapers never really gave them much coverage or credit either, and through the years the band's concerts and albums have generally been greeted with apathy or derision. A couple of years back some local magazine that I can't even remember printed a list of the top 100 bands to come out of Seattle. Alice In Chains wasn't even mentioned. So that brings us back to today. I'm used to the band receiving this kind of crappy treatment, and I'm not naive enough to think that just because the band is from Seattle they should get a free pass from the local press, but this review was just ignorant, so I wanted to reply. When I first sat down to write this, I was pretty pissed off, not so much because it was a lousy review, but because it was so mean-spirited. I planned on rebutting some of his more ridiculous assertions, but nothing I write will change this guy's mind. He didn't like the show, he doesn't like the fact that the band is back together with William on board, and he doesn't have any respect for the people who do. And ultimately that's his loss. I've been with this band for over 20 years. Through the very best of times, and through the unimaginable worst of times. I've seen them perform live hundreds upon hundreds of times, and all I know is that as I stood in the Paramount Theater Friday night and watched the band I love play "Nutshell," I still got goosebumps. I fully understand that the music of Alice In Chains doesn't resonate with everyone that way. And that's okay. But for the people like me who have always been moved by this music, and continue to be, there's a connection that is pretty powerful. Since the band got back together and began playing shows again in 2006 I've traveled the world with them. I look out in the crowd every night and see people singing along. I see their smiles, and sometimes I see them cry. This band means something to a lot of people, and those people mean a lot to this band. And for one guy who can't respect that to denigrate them all in a few paragraphs is pretty lousy. For the record, the shows I watched in Seattle were awesome, and I know the 6,000 people in attendance would side with me, not a lone music critic with a chip on his shoulder. - Baldy

Will Howard Stern Replace Simon Cowell On American Idol? Posted: 08 Feb 2010 08:24 AM PST American Idol producers supposedly are attempting to lure Howard Stern to replace the outgoing Simon Cowell. But is Stern interested?
That's the multi-million dollar question. According to the New York Post (via Rolling Stone), Idol execs see Stern as the one man with both the star power and biting commentary needed for the role. Stern's blunt honesty would properly fill the position of the brutally frank 'bad guy' judge that Cowell has masterfully developed. Cowell recently announced that he would be leaving American Idol after this season to launch an American version of his successful U.K. amateur singing show The X-Factor. Of course, Idol people have not officially approached Stern, but that hasn't stopped Stern from coyly discussing a 'TV show' on his radio program: "I was approached by a major TV network to take over a TV show and leave here and do that next year — and I did turn it down… I'm not even sure if I want to be working. I'm waiting to see what happens." 'Turning it down' means nothing - Stern has time to make a decision. Conveniently, his contract with Sirius Radio expires next January, which of course is when the next season of Idol will be getting underway. But is he using Idol's offer as leverage in negotiations with Sirius? So, questions: Would Stern be more harsh on contestants than Simon? How will he jibe with new Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres? What do you think? -- Conrad Doucette |
