| Taylor Swift's Label Defends Her Grammy Performance Posted: 04 Feb 2010 10:36 AM PST You've either seen or heard about Taylor Swift's off-key warbling at the Grammys. Did it change your view of Swift? If so, the head of her label has some words for you.
The exec, Scott Borchetta of Big Machine Records, made his thoughts clear in Nashville's The Tennessean newspaper (via Rolling Stone). In his statement, Borchetta (fairly accurately) calls Swift the 'voice of her generation' He also (not so accurately) accused Sift's detractors of being 'jealous.' His statement: "The facts say she is the undisputed best communicator that we've got," Borchetta said. "So when she says something or feels something it affects more people than anybody else. Maybe she's not the best technical singer, but she is the best emotional singer. Everybody gets up there and is technically perfect people don't seem to want more of it. There's not an artist in any other format that people want more of than they want of Taylor. I think (the critics) are missing the whole voice of a generation that is happening right in front of them. Maybe they are jealous or can't understand that. But obviously the people that she talks to are engaged with her. No one is perfect on any given day. Maybe in that moment we didn't have the best night, but in the same breath, maybe we did." Of course, it wasn't so bad a night for Swift - she walked away with several Grammys, including one for Album Of The Year. But for the first time, a bit of the bloom is off the rose. So are the attacks on Swift unfair? Will this raw revelation of her shaky voice affect sales, or what her fans think of her talents? -- Conrad Doucette Photo via Taylor Swift's MySpace |
| Alicia Keys, Shakira to Rock the 2010 NBA All-Star Game Posted: 04 Feb 2010 08:54 AM PST
Shakira will bring the heat with performances of "Give It Up to Me" and "She Wolf" from her current hit album, 'She Wolf'. Alicia Keys will keep things rocking with a trio of super hits including her classic hit "No One," "Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart" from her new album 'Element of Freedom,' and - of course - "Empire State of Mind". Not only that, Usher will be performing his new single, "More" during the introduction of the 2010 NBA All-Stars. Pretty sweet. You get a great game and some killer music to boot. | Steven Tyler To Aerosmith: Replace Me And I'll Sue Posted: 04 Feb 2010 07:29 AM PST Rock n' roll always gets a little nastier when lawyers get involved.
The current situation within Aerosmith, of course, is already messy. To recap: Steven Tyler and the remaining four members of Aerosmith (Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer) have been at odds for over a year. First, the issue was reportedly diva-like behavior on tour from Tyler. Later, a Tyler spill at a South Dakota show forced the cancellation of remaining summer tour dates. In the wake of his injury, Tyler announced he would spend two years focusing on what he unsubtly called 'Brand Tyler.' His bandmates were not amused. By last fall, the band began to not so quietly remark that a replacement singer might be sought. Rumors of possible singers (Lenny Kravitz, later debunked) emerged. Since then, Tyler has begun to surface more often, notably at a Joe Perry show in New York, where Tyler essentially bum-rushed the stage following a surprise arrival backstage. More recently, and bizarrely, Tyler mixed it up with fans at some random California bar's Aerosmith-themed karaoke night. All of which seemed to be strong signals that Tyler intended to hang tightly onto his role as Aerosmith frontman. And then last week, in case his bandmates were unsure of Tyler's intentions, he brought in a lawyer to deliver some tough talk. That lawyer, Skip Miller, fired off a letter to Howard Kaufman, Aerosmith's manager. It's AWESOME in its boldness and anger. Some highlights (via Billboard): "Steven Tyler does not want lawsuits. We do not want to go in that direction. The direction we want is Aerosmith, with Steven Tyler, touring in Europe, touring Latin America, releasing a new album...This is the direction it's all intended to go. It's just amazing to me current management would be taking any other position." "[Kaufman] said point blank he didn't think Steven should be part of Aerosmith, flat-out said the band would be better off without Steven -- which, in my opinion, is a very questionable management decision by a fiduciary." "The animus and negativity you have expressed towards Mr. Tyler has created an inability to protect both Steven as an individual and the band as a whole. This behavior directed towards a person committing to rehabilitation and recovery is detrimental and hurtful on both a personal and professional level. This is a time Steven has dedicated to transform his life." "Contrary to all common sense, you are seeking to bring about the replacement of Steven Tyler. Aerosmith without Steven Tyler is like the Rolling Stones without Mick Jagger, or U2 without Bono. While this management strategy may get the band on the road a few months sooner, it ultimately could destroy Aerosmith." "Can you imagine the manager of the Rolling Stones calling for the replacement of Mick Jagger? It's just absurd...Tyler is very unique, distinctive. Steven is Aerosmith, along with the others. He's the guy the public knows. He's the singer. I'm blown away that the current manager would even suggest something like (replacing him)." That is one pissed off lawyer - one who is playing the rehab card to excuse Tyler's strange and clearly band-upsetting behavior over the past year. But he's right - Aerosmith without Tyler would not be Aerosmith. What do you think? Is a Tyler-less Aerosmith still Aerosmith? -- Conrad Doucette |
| Video Of The Day: Green Day with the Cast Of American Idiot, "21 Guns" Posted: 04 Feb 2010 05:00 AM PST Green Day's 2004 rock opera American Idiot was always Broadway-ready. Now, two months ahead of the musical's New York opening, we have the single, one of American Idiot-the-musical's few numbers not from American Idiot-the-album: 21st Century Breakdown's "21 Guns," featuring both band and cast. Video after the jump.
"21 Guns" was originally found on the album 21st Century Breakdown, out now. -- Conrad Doucette |
