Alice In Chains Tour Blog: Vancouver Posted: 03 Feb 2010 12:29 PM PST
We arrived in Vancouver yesterday and I went out to dinner with Jerry & Sean. As we were walking back to the hotel a homeless guy asked us for money, then noticed my AIC tour jacket. "Great band man," he said. "I love that song 'Rooster'." He then proceed to sing a couple of lines, all the while not realizing who Jerry & Sean were. Jerry said he'd take a homeless guy singing one of his songs over a Grammy any day, so that was a nice way to start things off (and yes, Sean gave the dude some money). On to the show. The Orpheum Theater is a seated venue, which means security keeps the fans from moving from in front of their seats. This generally keeps the fans from going full-tilt nuts during the show, but Vancouver still brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm. The show began with a giant kabuki screen hanging in front of the stage, and when the house lights went down the stage lighting projected the band's shadows on the screen. They opened with "All Secrets Known" and about 20 or 30 seconds in to the song, the screen dropped and the crowd went nuts. The next 110 minutes were filled with a great mix of old and new songs, and the fans were screaming and singing along from start to finish. If there was an event for a kickass rock concert in the Olympics, I'd try and convince the band to stick around for another 10 days and pick up a gold medal. Instead we headed back across the border to pummel America for seven more weeks. As I've mentioned before, border crossings can get interesting with this band sometimes. When we pulled up and went in last night, the agent at the desk said he'd seen the guys open for Ozzy way back when, so right away we knew we'd be there for a while. Usually if the agents are familiar with the band and its history & reputation, that means they're gonna grab up some drug sniffing dogs and dig through the bus. Times have changed though, and the most potent stuff on the bus was some leftover sushi, so we got the okay and made our way back into the States and on to Seattle. Next up; two sold out nights at the Paramount Theater. - Baldy

Flaming Lips To Play Dark Side Of The Moon At Bonnaroo Posted: 03 Feb 2010 08:56 AM PST The Bonnaroo 2010 lineup announcement won't come down until Tuesday, but informational leaks are starting to emerge. The news comes straight from the horse's mouth, that is, Wayne Coyne himself. The Lips frontman let it slip to Spinner that the band was planning to perform the Pink Floyd classic Dark Side Of The Moon in its entirety as part of an appearance at this summer's Bonnaroo. The Lips, of course, recorded a song for song cover of the album that was released in December. On New Year's Eve, the band performed the album at a New Year's Eve show in their hometown of Oklahoma City. It was rumored that the holiday performance may have been the only outing the Lips would be giving Dark Side. Not so. In fact, Coyne says that the Bonnaroo surroundings are a fitting venue for the space rock opus. Said Wayne: "We did it at the New Year's Eve show just knowing everybody's gonna be taking acid, staying awake until five in the morning. We might as well just be jamming on some freak-out music. I don't think it'll be that much of a stretch to think Friday night at 2:30 in the morning at Bonnaroo would be that much different than being in Oklahoma City on New Year's Eve. I'm sure people will be having their own party while we play this space rock or whatever. In that sense it's perfect for that." If anyone knows freak-out music, it's the Flaming Lips. So, days before the official Bonnaroo announcement, we already know the 2010 edition will be mind-blowing. -- Conrad Doucette |
The Strokes Began Recording New Album On Monday Posted: 03 Feb 2010 06:44 AM PST They're back... finally. According to a post on the Strokes' official website, the band began recording on Monday, February 1. That recording sign image is above greets those visiting the site's landing page. Clearly, they, or their webmaster, is excited. Fans must be, too. The details: the band are in New York's Avatar Studios working with Joe Chicarelli, a Grammy-winning producer who's worked with U2 and Bjork. Engineering is Gus Oberg, also a Grammy winner. After years of inactivity, it's been a fairly busy month or two for the Strokes. Late last year, it was announced that the band would headline the Isle Of Wight Festival in England for the first time since 2006. With Julian Casablancas' solo album released and supporting tourdates complete, there seems to be a clear schedule for a full return of the Strokes. But when will we see an album? 2010? Or 2011? -- Conrad Doucette |
Video Of The Day: Switchfoot, "Mess Of Me" Posted: 03 Feb 2010 06:22 AM PST The full power of the Switchfoot live experience is on display in "Mess Of Me." Also on display? The full power of Switchfoot walking around town in artsy black and white and washed-out tones. Video after the jump.
